A Chinese-Japanese wedding in Provence
Metinee and Michael got married earlier this year in Provence, bringing their families and closest friends from the US to Château de Sannes for a few special days together.
We absolutely loved the colour scheme for this wedding. Inspired by the colours and paintings of Provence, it mixed soft blues, purple tones, light pinks and butter yellows, creating a palette that felt very much at home in the gardens and around the château.
We also loved the contrast between the garden feel of the ceremony, the relaxed elegance of the poolside cocktail hour and the clean, modern design of the dinner. The couple wanted their Chinese and Japanese heritage to be part of the celebration too, and we incorporated personal touches throughout the day, including a custom-made seating plan wall covered with individual fortune cookies, each one holding a guest's table number.
Getting ready at Château de Sannes
On the morning of the wedding, Metinee and her bridal party got pampered in her room, while Michael got ready with his friends in another part of the château.
Château de Sannes is one of our favourite wedding venues in Provence. It is easily accessible, has magnificent French gardens and beautiful outdoor spaces, and offers accommodation on site for the whole bridal party. The château is also close to some of our favourite Provençal villages, with lovely independent shops and restaurants and a good selection of high-quality accommodation for guests.
A garden-inspired ceremony
The ceremony was set in the gardens, beneath the impressive trees which also provided welcome shade for the guests.
Metinee and Michael wanted the ceremony to feel intimate and simple, without being overly staged. They wanted it to feel like a garden wedding, so we kept the design natural and let the setting do much of the work.
Long benches covered in beautiful cream fabric were placed along a gently meandering aisle, adding a romantic touch while keeping the focus on the gardens and the couple.
Cocktails by the pool
After the ceremony, everyone moved to the pool area to enjoy freshly made cocktails, delicious canapés and the beautiful surroundings.
The bar was custom made for the wedding and inspired by Provence painters, bringing the colour palette of the day into another part of the celebration. It was one of those details that felt beautiful and very connected to the location, without being too literal.
A modern dinner design
For dinner, the couple was looking for a clean, modern design without too much going on visually.
They also wanted to dance outside and have a sweetheart table, so we designed the floor plan around the dance floor. Placing it centrally meant that guests could easily move between the tables and the dance floor throughout the evening, while horseshoe-shaped tables on either side created a more intimate feel.
Beautiful florals and candles brought a romantic touch to the tables, while tall lamps provided the necessary lighting after sunset. Their simple, modern lines worked particularly well with the clean dinner design without making the tables feel busy.
The Chinese influence could be felt in the details, including the seating plan: a custom-made wall displaying individual fortune cookies, each containing a guest's table number. It was a fun detail for guests to discover and a lovely way to bring part of the bride's heritage into the reception design.
After cutting the cake and a gorgeous first dance, everyone joined the dance floor for a party under the stars.
For us, this wedding was a lovely example of how a celebration in Provence can feel connected to its setting while still being completely personal to the couple. From the Provençal-inspired colour palette to the Chinese and Japanese touches, every part of the design was chosen to bring together the place, the couple and the experience they wanted to create for their guests.
