Outstanding Cote d'Azur wedding venue : Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

7th July 2012

Built on the narrowest part of the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, the villa is one of the most beautiful on the Côte d’Azur. French garden, grand patio, oriental dining room, roseraie, the exteriors of this venue are just amazing and offer many spaces for your wedding ceremony and reception.

Cap Ferrat is one of the three major capes of the French Riviera and probably the most beautiful. Like a long arm jutting into the Mediterranean, it separates the bay of Villefranche and that of Beaulieu, about half way between Nice and Monaco.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was constructed there at the beginning of the 20th century by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild, wealthy French socialite, who filled the mansion with antique furniture, Old Master paintings, sculptures and other art works. She also had several gardens created around the villa, offering patios, waterfalls, ponds, herbaceous borders, shady paths and rare trees, and now classified as one of the Notable Gardens of France.

The main garden was conceived in the form of a ship, to be viewed from the loggia of the house, which was like the bridge of a vessel, with the sea visible on all sides. It was inspired by voyage she made on the liner ‘Île de France. The thirty gardeners who maintained the garden were dressed as sailors, with berets with red pom poms !

On her death in 1934, the Baroness charitably donated the property to the Institut de France, who have maintained it to this day.

The villa is surrounded by nine gardens, each on a different theme: Florentine, Spanish, Garden à la française, exotic, a stone garden, a Japanese garden, a rose garden and a garden de Sèvres.

For your wedding, you can have the private use of the French gardens (300 pax in a seated dinner), the patio (230 pax in seated dinner) and the oriental dining room (70 pax in a seated dinner).

The French Garden : This garden stands above all the others, both in size and location. It runs directly in front of the Villa. From the building, the view is outstanding and magnificent, ending in the Temple of Love. This exact replica of the one at the Trianon overlooks the stepped waterfall. The sloping structure of the waterfall was especially designed to make the water look white, the famous Oriental “water shawl”. From the garden, there is a unique view of the palazzino for art lovers. In summer, lotus and water lilies cover the large ponds. The lawns, decorated with classical clay pots and large vases from the Italian Renaissance, are perfectly laid out. On the East terrace, Catalan sculptures await, serene and placid, knowing they will not fail to impress visitors, who are filled with wonder at this flourishing and yet so structured display of nature.

The covered patio: The surprisingly large patio is a triumph of eclectism. Pink marble colonnades from Verona support immense arches, evoking the Italian villas of the Renaissance. The patio, where Béatrice hosted her elegant receptions, displays a number of medieval and Renaissance works of art. It contrasts sharply with the surrounding rooms, which are a testament to Béatrice’s passion for French XVIIIth century masterpieces.

The oriental dinning room : Decorated in an oriental style, its eleven plate glass windows look out onto the refined Sèvres Garden and Villefranche harbour. Upon night fall, the lights along the Côte d’Azur and from the harboured yachts make for a splendid view.

For a summer wedding at the villa de Rothschild, ceremony and dinner can be organised in the French garden. The dancing party can then be organised in the patio.
